Don't get 'singled-out on your next cruise vacation'!
Solo travelers often face challenges in finding bargains on cruise travel. The cruise industry views a cabin occupied by one person as less profitable because it only generates half the room revenue and reduces potential onboard income from spa treatments, shore excursions, and drinks. This explains the single supplement, which typically ranges from 50 to 100 percent above the double-occupancy rate. A lower single supplement percentage results in less additional cost for solo travelers.
Recent statistics show that the proportion of adults over 18 who are married has dropped from 72% in 1960 to 45%. The number of people living alone has increased from 13% to 29% of households. These numbers to continue to rise

Although these statistics show an increase in demand for singles cruiser berth’s, it appears that the cruise industry has, until recently, cast a blind eye on this trend. Either single cruisers have resigned themselves to electing for other types of travel or have decided to travel less and suck up the disproportionate price tag for cruising alone. This article attempts to offer some relief for this common travel dilemma and perhaps bring more attention to this daunting principle of the travel industry.
Travel agencies often offer “singles cruises,” but this term can be ambiguous. It could refer to unmarried, divorced, married but open, widowed, or actively seeking partners. The nature of participants’ relationships can’t be regulated, and you’ll likely share a cabin with an unknown individual with no chance for refund or change during the cruise. This can disrupt vacation plans and is not recommended.

Thanks Ted, for the great article on solo cruising. I tell you it was a experience for me to go on the Rhine cruise alone. Felt kind of bad seeing other guys and their wife or girlfriend. I was lucky to get acquainted with these two couples. One from the Bay area of California and the other couple from the UK. I sat with them during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Anyway they made the trip more comfortable for me. Larry PS: Homelands Cruise in August, and I will be alone on that one too!
Thanks Lawrence, sorry for late reply. Yes solo travel not so good. Thinking about doing a a cruise forum for cruisers to get together, just for Viking cruisers.
