Smoke, Sausages & the Danube: Discovering Regensburg’s Historic Wurstkuchl

A Taste of History at the Historic Wurstkuchl in Regensburg
👉 “If there is one place along the Danube where history still sizzles over an open flame, it’s the legendary Wurstkuchl in Regensburg.
There are some places along the Danube that you simply visit… and others you experience with all five senses. The moment you catch the smoky aroma of sausages drifting through the riverside air in Regensburg, you know you have found one of the city’s true treasures — the historic Historische Wurstkuchl.
Perfectly located beside the iconic Stone Bridge and just a short stroll from many Danube river cruise docks, this tiny riverside kitchen has been welcoming hungry travelers for centuries. And after one visit, it is easy to understand why.
A Medieval Lunch Stop That Never Went Out of Style
The Wurstkuchl’s story dates back nearly 900 years. Originally built during the construction of Regensburg’s Stone Bridge between 1135 and 1146, the small building first served as the construction office for the bridge builders.
Once the bridge was completed — considered one of medieval Europe’s engineering marvels — the building transformed into a food stand serving stonemasons, dockworkers, and river laborers along the Danube.
Back then, Regensburg was one of Europe’s busiest trading ports, with ships constantly arriving loaded with goods from across the continent. Hungry workers needed quick, hearty meals before heading back to the riverfront.
In many ways, not much has changed.
Today, river cruise guests gather in almost the exact same spot, still drawn by the smell of sizzling sausages and the lively atmosphere along the Danube. I always laugh imagining medieval dockworkers impatiently waiting in line here just as tourists do today.

The Sausages That Made History
The true stars of the Wurstkuchl are the famous little pork sausages, still handmade using a closely guarded recipe known only to the master butcher. Crafted from pure pork ham and grilled over an open charcoal fire, they deliver that unmistakable smoky flavor that instantly sets them apar
The classic order is the legendary “Würstl auf Kraut” — sizzling sausages served over homemade sauerkraut with the Wurstkuchl’s famous sweet mustard.
And trust me, the mustard deserves its own reputation.
One enthusiastic squeeze while wearing a white cruise shirt could leave you with a souvenir more permanent than your vacation photos.
Dining Along the Danube
Part of the magic here is the setting itself. Outdoor tables line the Danube River with beautiful views of the Stone Bridge, passing riverboats, and Regensburg’s medieval skyline. On a sunny afternoon, it becomes one of the most enjoyable lunch spots anywhere along the Danube cruise route.
I always enjoy relaxing outside with a cold Bavarian beer, watching the river traffic drift by while the charcoal grill works nonstop nearby. Inside, the cozy historic “Stüberl” still feels wonderfully authentic, like a tavern where dockworkers might have gathered centuries ago to warm up after a long day on the river.
A True Danube Cruise Experience
What I appreciate most about the Wurstkuchl is its authenticity. The sauerkraut is still fermented in-house, the mustard still follows a historic recipe, and the sausages are still crafted with remarkable care.
No trendy reinventions.
No tourist gimmicks.
Just simple Bavarian food done exceptionally well for nearly 900 years.
For anyone cruising the Danube, a stop at the Wurstkuchl is more than just lunch — it is one of those memorable little experiences that stays with you long after the ship sails on toward Passau, Vienna, or Budapest.
Why Experience Matters
With meaningful distinctions between Danube, Rhine or Rhone River Cruises, choosing the right itinerary and cruise line to fit, truly matters. Shelley and Ted bring decades of firsthand experience across the entire spectrum of river cruising, understanding how subtle differences in ship design, dining, and itineraries shape the onboard experience.
If you’re considering where to journey next — and how you might go with them — we’d be honored to help guide you aboard.
