OCEAN CRUISING UNLEASHED

Cunard sponsored the 2017 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City February 11-14, 2017 and was the only travel company represented at the show.

Cunard bellman offered white gloved “doggy” tea service to canine attendees who stopped by Cunard’s photo booth at the show, including @WallytheWelshCorgi, one of the top Instagram dogs in New York. Dogs (and humans) took photos in front of an oversized backdrop of Queen Mary 2.

As the only cruise line to offer dogs and cats passage on the company’s famed Transatlantic Crossings, Cunard has a long history of sailing pets — its pet-friendly policy dates back 176 years to the maiden voyage of the Britannia in 1840. Since then, the company has transported a surprising number of notable pets: Rin-Tin-Tin, star of 36 silent films, traveled on the Berengaria, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s beloved pup and Pudsey, winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2012. In the 1950s, Elizabeth Taylor brought her pampered puppies on board the original Queen Mary, and exercised them regularly on the ship’s sports deck. (She even ordered special meals for them from the fish chef.)

Pet travel continues to soar in the United States and due to increased demand, Cunard doubled the size of its kennels on Queen Mary 2 during the flagship’s recent $132 million renovation. Overall, Queen Mary 2’s enhanced pet service offers a kinder, gentler alternative to pet transportation. The owners and their companions will be greatly ‘relieved’ to know that these quarters have been adorned with country specific targets: a New York City fire hydrant for the yanks and an official British lamp post, as advised by the Duke and Duchess of Windsor (taken from the Cunard building in Liverpool) for proper piddling, depending on one’s side of the Atlantic.

Those seeking kennel space must allow for advance planning; at least a year in advance to secure a space requiring following strict guidelines as outlined here  and up-to-date vet papers, signed off on shortly before disembarkation, are a must. An upper kennel goes for $800 and a lower kennel $1,000. One should be aware of the United Kingdom’s rules regarding “Bringing your pet dog, cat or ferret to the UK“, which are stricter than most countries (although Cunard does not welcome ferrets at this time). Find more detailed information at pettravel.com, or even better order the Cunard documents covering such.

Cunard Cruise Lines, steeped in the refined traditions of elegant transatlantic cruising, have taken a royal approach to canine ocean crossings: Cunard Frisbees, name tags, food dish and scoop, blanket and their own kennel space. To ensure that pet passengers are as glamorous as their human counterparts, Cunard partnered with the British sportswear brand Barbour in 2016 to offer smart accessories on-board such as jackets, collars and leashes. There’s also a selection of chew toys for the canines and interactive toys for cats, Yes – they are also provided with their own Cunard life jacket as their safety is every bit as important as other passengers.

They are walked twice a day on their own private deck area and owners can visit their dogs at certain times of the day to see how they are enjoying their voyage. And as expected,  premium food and as a special touch just before bedtime every dog is given a healthy gourmet cookie freshly prepared by one of Cunard’s wonderful chefs.

So when you return to your stateroom after a night out to find your bed ‘turned down’, slippers by the bed and a chocolate on your pillow, then there is no need to feel guilty as your dog has been equally treated as an esteemed guest with a cookie before bedtime.
