THE BIGGEST LITTLE ROAD TOUR IN PARIS

Paris never fails to satisfy our longing for an effluence of visual and epicurean delights. With its lamp-lit bridges spanning the Seine, the gargoyled Notre Dame cathedral and the art nouveau cafes spilling on to wicker chair-lined terraces, such memories are indelibly etched in the hearts and minds of anyone who has ever visited this city. However, attempting to visit such a sprawling metropolis, with very little time to spare, can be a daunting task, if not planned correctly.

When initially visiting a foreign city, it’s always wise to get out and about, preferably with a local, familiar with the area. Big bus tours, often impersonal and stunted by the heavy traffic, common to most cities, gives one very little to opportunity to view anything closely. Walking tours or single venues visits won’t give you a good overall summary of the local area. May I suggest hiring a tour guide, with a smaller, more maneuverable vehicle, to enable a better immersion into the local area? If it includes local cuisine, a smattering of photo ops near Paris’ famous structures, with an informative host, you then will have the elements for an enlightening trip filled with great memories and pictures to bring home.

There is one tour, offered by Viator, that includes all of these elements and more, its called: Viator Exclusive: Private Paris Tour by Citroen 2CV.  This venture is a delightful opportunity to get a taste of Parisian culture, snap some iconic landmarks and map out some of the best sights to see later.

France River Cruises French culture was born along the nation’s rivers. The light of Provence inspired an artistic movement along the leisurely Rhône. The vines of Bordeaux produced an enduring viniculture. Along the Seine, Claude Monet perfected the art of Impressionism at his beloved Giverny. Romantic riverside ruins from Roman and Norman days tell a deeper story. And all waterways in France lead to fertile farmlands whose bounty has shaped a celebrated cuisine. The mode of transportation for this journey is the Citroen Deux Chevaux (pronounced: duh shuvo, meaning in French, two horses) or 2CV, which has its own colorful history in Parisian lore. Citroen, first introduced this car as an answer to Volkswagen Beetle, becoming the people’s car of France, at the time of its introduction, more of an agrarian society than anything else. The 2CV had a surprising career. It received popular approval in the rural world for its go-everywhere suspension, was adored by the low earners for its unbeatable price, and loved by everybody for what it represented: a car beyond time, beyond fashion.

The Citroen Deux Chevaux or 2CV is a true symbol and historic monument of French motoring that draws generations of supporters.

After an hour exploring Paris, enjoy a break at the traditional French tea room Ladurée. Taste a hot beverage and a sweet treat at this former bakery that was transformed into a pastry shop in 1871 by Baron Haussmann. This tearoom, with a dessert menu longer than most wine lists, regales in old world charm, resplendent with the tinkling of fine china on quality tablecloths with gold stamped napkins combined with silver pitchers and flatware.

Ladurée is home to some of the best macarons in Paris, if not the world. Macarons are not to be confused with macaroons! Macaroons are small and slapdash coconut haystacks, and are often dipped in chocolate. Macarons are elegant little sandwiches that are made with meringue, almond flour, and buttercream filling. They are credited with developing the beloved double-decker macaron with its two sides and creamy ganache filling. This is said to have happened sometime around the 1930s. The one-sided macaron arrived in France from Italy sometime in the 16th century via Queen Catherine de’ Medici, but the recipe had remained unchanged.

Laduree is also famous for its macarons, which come in all different flavors, a popular Parisian treat, with over 135 tons sold every year!

This tour will take you through the bohemian quarters of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. This Parisian neighborhood has it all: genteel blocks lined with upscale art galleries, storied cafes, designer boutiques, atmospheric restaurants, and a fine selection of museums. Visit the Musée d’Orsay, a train station, (itself an architectural masterpiece and within, an art museum) with its magnificent vaulted ceiling and abundant natural light inside.

The historic streets of this quarter can get quite crowded, especially in summer, so mind your elbows and plunge in.
