Regensburg: Germany's Oldest Bridge and Sausage Factory, Still Alive and Well!

Some people call it “Italy’s northernmost city”, others prefer to describe Regensburg as “Germany’s medieval miracle”. It’s quite simply a city to love.

Regensburg is Bavaria’s 4th largest city with 150,000 inhabitants and is located on the most northern point of the river Danube. This city has long remained a favorite of  river cruisers on itineraries covering this historic German town. As the best preserved medieval city in Germany, Regensburg presents a perfect combination of an inviting skyline, impressive historic monuments and legendary Bavarian hospitality. The old town of Regensburg with Stadtamhof became UNESCO World Heritage in July 2006.

Here, like in no other central European city, authentic buildings of outstanding quality bear witness to the town’s political, religious and economic significance during the Middle Ages. Strolling along the atmospheric narrow lanes and crossing the historical squares, it is easy to imagine what life was like centuries ago, while experiencing the vibrant life of a modern city. Regensburg deserves its title as “Germany’s medieval miracle”.

The view of the Danube from Regensburg’s old quarter is dominated by the Stone Bridge. This medieval monument has served as a model for many other bridges, including Charles Bridge in Prague. Built between 1135 and 1146, it is Germany’s oldest vaulted stone bridge and has many sections still in their original state.

The bridge was once considered the ‘eighth wonder of the world’ and, at 310 metres long and seven metres wide, it was the largest of its kind in the world. For more than 800 years, it was the only stone bridge over the Danube from Ulm to Vienna. Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa launched the Third Crusade from here in May 1189.

On your Danube river cruise, you’ll most likely visit the “Wurstkuchl” (engl. Sausage Kitchen), which is the oldest sausage kitchen in the world, next to the Old Stone Bridge. This endearing local mainstay, established in 1146 to service the local dock workers, still continues its traditions of slow-simmered meals the traditional charcoal-grilled way, selling around 6000 sausages a day.

Testimonials:

We had a wonderful experience today and want to share. We have been in Ted’s Facebook Group, Friends Who Like Viking Cruises, for a while and enjoy most of the posts. We have done 3 Viking River cruises and 2 Viking Ocean, all booked directly with Viking. However, during our last 3 cruises we heard others comment about their great on-board credits and how they got this or that extra from their travel agent. Viking never gave anything extra on those trips. So…we decided to call Ted Karbowski to see what he could offer us. I can honestly tell you if you are on the fence about using a Travel Agent, give him a call at 954-290-8626. We are booked for our 6th Viking trip! He was on phone with us with Viking Air and we got our first choice of flights! Absolutely great service answering questions with prompt responses. So happy with his service we have referred some others to him! AR

5 star service! Ted really cares about his clients. I just keep telling my friends about him! I know of two other families that booked after me and we all say the same thing. We felt like family. He took care of everything and he checked back to make sure everything was as expected. Will book with Ted again! AP
