Regensburg, Germany — Stone Bridges, Sausages, and Timeless Charm

Regensburg: Germany's Oldest Bridge and Sausage Factory, Still Alive and Well!

Some people call it “Italy’s northernmost city”, others prefer to describe Regensburg as “Germany’s medieval miracle”. It’s quite simply a city to love.

Regensburg, Bavaria’s fourth-largest city with 150,000 residents, sits at the northernmost bend of the Danube and remains a favorite for river cruisers. As Germany’s best-preserved medieval city, its skyline, historic monuments, and warm Bavarian hospitality draw visitors year after year. The Old Town, together with Stadtamhof, earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2006.

The view of the Danube from Regensburg’s old quarter is dominated by the Stone Bridge. This medieval monument has served as a model for many other bridges, including Charles Bridge in Prague. Built between 1135 and 1146, it is Germany’s oldest vaulted stone bridge and has many sections still in their original state.

Once hailed as the “eighth wonder of the world,” Regensburg’s Old Stone Bridge — 310 meters long and seven meters wide — was the only stone crossing over the Danube between Ulm and Vienna for 800 years. Emperor Barbarossa even launched the Third Crusade from here in 1189.

Nearby, you’ll find the historic Wurstkuchl (Sausage Kitchen), serving charcoal-grilled sausages since 1146. Originally feeding dockworkers, it now dishes out over 6,000 sausages a day — a must-stop on any Danube river cruise.

Testimonials:

We’ve enjoyed being part of Ted’s Viking Cruises Facebook group and have done 5 Viking cruises booked direct. But after hearing others talk about the perks they got through travel agents, we called Ted Karbowski—and we’re so glad we did! He helped us book our 6th Viking trip, stayed on the line with Viking Air, and secured our first-choice flights. His service and quick responses have been fantastic — we’ve already referred friends! AR

5 star service! Ted really cares about his clients. I just keep telling my friends about him! I know of two other families that booked after me and we all say the same thing. We felt like family. He took care of everything and he checked back to make sure everything was as expected. Will book with Ted again! AP
