WORLD TRAVELER? TIME TO GET YOUR GLOBAL ENTRY STATUS!

No, you’re not just imagining things. The security line at the airport is getting worse. However there is a remedy. Global Entry (GE), which is part of government’s Trusted Traveler Programs, is a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) program that puts you in the fast lane at the customs line when you come back into the country, whether that’s walking through the airport Customs maze or driving across the Mexican or Canadian border.

This program provides  expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. People who have been approved for this program may enter the United States through automatic kiosks at select airports.

At airports, program members proceed to Global Entry kiosks, present their machine-readable passport or U.S. permanent resident card, place their fingerprints on the scanner for fingerprint verification and complete a customs declaration. The kiosk issues the traveler a transaction receipt and directs the traveler to baggage claim and the exit.

Travelers must be pre-approved for the Global Entry program. All applicants undergo a rigorous background check and in-person interview before enrollment. While Global Entry’s goal is to speed travelers through the process, members may still be selected for further examination when entering the United States. Any violation of the program’s terms and conditions will result in the appropriate enforcement action and termination of the traveler’s membership privileges.

How To Apply For Global Entry

For anyone who has encountered a long US re-entry queue, this program is remarkable in that it allows one to avoid these delays, which over time, will only become more untenable.

Although applicants must undergo a rigorous background check and an in-person interview before enrollment, the time invested is well spent when considering the overall benefits for world travelers.

The officer conducting the interview will take your fingerprints electronically.

Where to Register For GE Status

Why not get started on this today? The first step is to register for an account here and then begin the application. They will  ask for five years of address and employment history, so hopefully you have records of such.  Ensure that you give accurate information, submit payment of $100, (check with your airline or credit card company who may cover this cost) and that’s it for this step. You won’t hear anything for a week or so, during which time your background check is being done.

If there are no red flags, then they send you a note of approval and a reminder to schedule an interview to finish the application.

This is the part of this process that many people are finding increasingly difficult: you may have to wait months or even travel to a nearby town to find an open slot (it’s harder now that more people are applying) and making an extra trip to the airport, where many of the Global Entry and TSA Pre-Check offices are for an interview.

All applicants must undergo a rigorous background check…

All GE Applicants Get an In-Person Interview

The interview takes about fifteen minutes. U.S. citizens will need their passport for proving their identity, citizenship and admissibility to the U.S. Others will need other documents. Everyone will need their passport, as it’s used to practice using the GE kiosk at the interview. Be sure to bring a printout of your “Interview Scheduled” document.

At the interview you’ll be asked to confirm some of the information you supplied in your application as well as some other questions. The officer conducting the interview will take your fingerprints electronically and digitally photograph you. You’ll be taken to a Global Entry kiosk, with your passport, where you’ll go through the procedure you’ll use when you enter the U.S.

Use Your Pre-Check Benefits Right Away!

Several business days later you’ll get a Global Entry ID card in the mail. But you can start enjoying Pre-Check right away. When you’re approved, the Customs agent will hand you your known traveler number. The next time you book a flight, put that number in the designated box while you’re filling out all that annoying personal info. When you print your boarding pass at the airport, a big “TSA PRE CHECK” will be plastered on it, and you’re on your way to the fast lane.

Within a couple of weeks after the interview, you’ll get your Global Entry membership card with your “Trusted Traveler Number.” The card isn’t used when you’re flying into the U.S. It’s not used with the GE kiosks at the airport. The GE card can be used for lawful entry to the U.S. at land and sea ports of entry.

People who have been approved for this program may enter the United States through automatic kiosks at select airports.

You’ll need your “Trusted Traveler Number” to use TSA PreCheck. Each time you purchase an airline ticket on a PreCheck participating airline, your “Trusted Traveler Number” must be entered into your profile. Your boarding pass will indicate if you can use PreCheck for your flight. Sometimes you’re randomly chosen for regular security.

If you’re living in one of the nine states where driver’s licenses are not approved under the Real ID program, you can use your Global Entry card for identification to fly domestically and to enter federal facilities.

If you only travel domestically, you can get the more affordable TSA PreCheck membership, but if you’re considering any international travel, you probably should consider getting the Global Entry card for just $15 more for a five-year term, a mere $3 per year extra.

CBP Launches GE Enrollment on Arrival at Select International Airports

Enrollment on Arrival is a program operated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to allow Global Entry applicants who are conditionally approved to complete their interviews upon arrival into the United States. The Enrollment on Arrival program eliminates the need for a Global Entry applicant to schedule an interview at an enrollment center to complete the application process.

When landing in an international terminal follow the signage directing you to CBP officers who can complete your Global Entry interview during your admissibility inspection. You won’t need any additional documents other than the requisite documents for international travel (e.g., your passport)

Global Entry Program Continues To Grow In Participation and Popularity

“Global Entry continues to be one of CBP’s most successful and popular programs with application volume steadily increasing over the past several years,” said Acting Commissioner Kevin McAleenan. “With Enrollment on Arrival, we are adapting and innovating our process to meet the program’s demands by providing flexibility and additional options for travelers who need to complete their Global Entry interview.”

Once a traveler is conditionally-approved, instead of scheduling an interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center, the traveler can complete the enrollment interview during CBP primary inspection at a participating airport. Upon arrival, travelers will be directed to a primary booth designated specifically for Enrollment on Arrival. A CBP officer will conduct both the primary processing and Global Entry interview and collect the traveler’s biometrics to complete the enrollment. The traveler will then be cleared for entry into the United States and will be a Global Entry member.
